Treatments are important, but they are simply no substitute for a solid strategy of preventive care, such as what we proudly promote here at Dowagiac Family Dentistry. It all begins at home, but you cannot do it all on your own. And you won’t have to. Just one visit to our office every six months is all it takes to put the odds in your favor to maintain the highest possible level of oral wellness.
Dental plaque is responsible for most, if not all, of the problems that are preventable, which means tooth decay (cavities) and gum disease. Plaque erodes your precious tooth enamel. Small holes form, and that exposes the nerve and pulp inside. What results can range from a bothersome toothache to severe pain, tooth sensitivity, a bacterial infection, root canal, and maybe even the loss of a tooth. That’s a lot of risk to take. Our Dowagiac dental office wants you to know there are consequences for your gums, too. Redness and irritation are the first stage, which is gingivitis. If not addressed in a timely manner, those symptoms become more concerning, with persistent bad breath, receding gums, and bleeding when brushing being common. Inflammation and infection may occur, and you could lose important gum and bone tissue, with the eventual outcome being loose teeth. Brush and floss every day. You should brush at least twice: upon waking, and then again before bed. If possible, brush after meals, as well. Flossing should be done once daily at bedtime. And then schedule a dental exam and teeth cleaning at our Dowagiac dental office twice per year. If you follow those guidelines, we can’t guarantee that you’ll never have cavities or gum disease, but you can make them very rare.
Now is the perfect time to reach out to us and ensure preventive care by scheduling your next exam and cleaning. Call our Dowagiac dental office now.
